Parents in your school community are juggling a lot.
- Work commitment
- Multiple children
- Children with multiple interests and talents
Many parents are more committed than ever to keeping their children active in clubs, sports, and other opportunities each week. That’s a wonderful thing — but it means that accurate, timely information from school becomes essential.
When SOCS is used well, with consistent standards across co-curricular clubs, it helps parents manage the pressures and logistics of busy family life.
It also builds goodwill. Last-minute changes will always happen — illness, weather, travel disruption — but if those are rare exceptions rather than a regular pattern, parents are far more likely to be accommodating and understanding.
One reason friction sometimes arises between schools and parents is that each department focuses on the great work they’re doing in their own area of responsibility. It’s easy to forget that parents are an important part of the equation.
Supporting parents in managing their side of the juggle doesn’t mean departments have to rewrite their schedules. It does mean making sure parents have the key information they need well in advance, especially for:
- Residential trips or tours (dates ideally shared years in advance).
- Activities or events requiring significant financial commitment.
- Potential semi-final or final dates for national competitions (even if pencilled as provisional).
1
Publish key dates early — even if they’re marked “TBC,” so parents can begin to plan.
2
Keep information in one place — using SOCS as the single source of truth across departments.
3
Flag likely busy periods — when several big events overlap, so families can avoid unnecessary clashes.
SOCS is a powerful tool for pulling this information together and giving parents a clear view of what’s coming up — so they can plan, budget, and support their children’s involvement without unnecessary stress.
When schools help parents manage the juggle, it strengthens trust and partnership. Parents can plan confidently, children arrive prepared, and staff spend less time fielding avoidable queries or complaints. Clear communication through SOCS doesn’t just make life easier for families — it helps the whole school community function smoothly.
At SOCS, we’re continually developing tools to make life easier for both schools and families. Our new parent portal has been designed with parents in mind — giving them a clearer, more accessible view of everything they need in one place, from activities and schedules to key updates. You can find out more here.
Richard Shorter, founder of Non-Perfect Dad, works with schools and organisations across the country to help parents and staff collaborate more closely for better outcomes for young people. As a parent of three children, he is also a regular user of the SOCS platform.
